Florida’s beautiful air wouldn’t be accessible if it weren’t for the wonders of towing. Here are three more photos of flying in Florida in May, 2005. In the top photo Tin Iklovac gets away after a clean launch. The middle picture is of me about to lift off, and the lower photo shows me hooked into the tow line, ready for a reverse launch.
I’ve made quite a few flying trips to Florida and I’ve never been disappointed. Florida is the place to be in April and May. The spring conditions are perfect for PG XC with light winds and high cloudbase. Earlier in the season it can be too windy (perfect for hangies and sailplanes) and later on in the summer there’s a lot of afternoon OD.
If you want to sample Florida’s sweet air check out Graybird Airsports near Dunnellon, north of Orlando or The Florida Ridge Air Sports Park just north of Fort Myers, south of Lake Okeechobee. I’ve had some great XC flying at both of these locations. Either of these operations can tow you up if you call in advance and make arrangements. The paragliding world has yet to discover the delights that Florida has to offer – see you there next spring.
