Hidden Mountain

Hidden Mountain is about 20 miles west of where i live. The hill is like a huge open air gallery of ancient and more recent rock art.  For years I've known about the petroglyphs and ruins scattered around the hill, but today was the first time I hiked it. Hidden Mountain is best known as the home of the Mystery Rock. Visiting this area requires a recreational use permit from the New Mexico Land Commission.

This inscription was in a particularly steep and narrow canyon

Here is the  Mystery Rock. Many believe that it's a condensed version of the Ten Commandments, written in an ancient form of Hebrew and left here by the Lost Tribe of Israel during Old Testament times.

Bird Man.

Some scholars say this one says: "God is Great" in ancient Hebrew.

I added a stone to this modern cairn near the top of Hidden Mountain.

A short lived squall blew in and interrupted the fall sunshine. The thunder sounded good.

There's much more to explore on the ground, and in the air above Hidden Mountain.

These pictures have such a compelling feel to them. They make me want to leave the world for a while, and sit in the desert alone. Thank you for bringing this to me.

I have visited Hidden Mountain twice, first in 1993, then again in 2004. You can see some of my photos on my Flickr page:
