Towing Part 4: Ram Air vs. Round

Our tow rig is set up so that when the pilot disconnects from the line a 4 cell ram air parachute is automatically deployed to keep the line in the air while we rewind it. It can take some pretty advanced kite flying skills to fly the line back on to the winch in turbulence and crosswinds. Getting all the line back in without crashing the kite can feel lke fighting and landing a big game fish. Malfunctions relating to the line recovery process in general and the ram air chute in particular are not uncomon on our rig. The new school approach is to use a super stable round chute and overcome it's inefficiency with a powerful rewind motor.
