Sun Crest

The epic evening session didn't happen. The winds started out looking great but turned light and cross, making it impossible to get up from the bench. The half way launch was working and a lot of pilots headed there by foot or four wheel drive. I went with my friends the Biernackis and Tony Lang to try a site I'd never flown. It's called Sun Crest, named after the subdivision it's located in. You launch from one of the vacant lots. Sun Crest is a mile or so east of the North Side and the idea is to launch, gain some altitude and fly over to the North Side, intercepting the ridge with enough altitude to work the ridge lift and soar up the side of the hill. Well, it didn't exactly work out like that. All of us made it to the nice grassy park you see in the picture. The park is right below the North Side, but none of us got up on the ridge. It was a fun extended death glide in smooth bouyant air and we wound up over the park with just enough altitude to set up an approach and land.

Meanwhile, back at the Point a pilot threw his reserve parachute after he experienced an aerobatically induced malfunction. He landed on the side of the hill. I heard that he was OK and in the process of extracting his wing from a large bush.

Tomorrow I'm going to Twin Falls, Idaho to do a different kind of flying.
